Welcome to the Public Safety Institute

The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) created the Public Safety Institute (PSI) to improve the health and safety of public safety employees and the general public.

Public safety employees include firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, law enforcement officers, correctional officers, and other public health service officers. The College of Public Health has also focused on the health and safety of miners. The goal of the PSI is to facilitate translation of existing research into improvements in the health of public safety employees as well as the safety of the general public, as well as to build additional research and outreach breadth and depth.

Public safety organizations are predominantly local in nature and frequently operate based on traditional practices. The PSI will facilitate improvement in these practices using identification and dissemination of best practices, technological interventions, and international exchange to improve the health and well being of public safety employees who are integral to the protection and support of our communities.
